Progress of G3 PURETORQ™ Actuator (2007/9)

In comparison with the original design, there are four main points of improvement as following:
1. Materials of the vane and housing.
Obviously we can see that the main difference between these two generations is the change of material. Engineering plastic ejection process provides mold flexibility, and consequently reduces the cost of mold- modifying immensely. However, due to the physical properties of the engineering plastic, achieving stable uniformity and flatness has been always frustrating to manufacturing staff and R&D unit like us.
Aluminum alloy totally solves this problem without fluctuating cost.
This new material increases the yield rate from 61% to 93%, which is the reason why there is no price change. The hardness of the material ensures the flatness of the vane reaches 1,000,000 life cycles.
2. The angle of “Tri-seal”.
After hundred of thousands tests, we found that leakage is most likely to occur at the angle of the seal (Fig. 1, a). A perpendicular angle causes the seal to be out of shape when the vane is running around 200,000 cycles. In G3, therefore, we modify the cross section of the seal to an arch. As we expected, that this new design increases the wearing time.
3. Shaft design.
The shaft is the main cost of the product. We used to wrap the stainless steel shaft with engineering plastic for the anti-corrosive type. Nevertheless, in the pressure die-casting process of Aluminum, stainless steel or carbon steel adaptors are integrated with the vane partially, hence efficiently reducing the waste of materials and costs.
